During Level 3 of “Polite Walking” (loose leash walking), we leave the training barn and work outside, among the cats, the sheep and all the other distractions. Dogs are rewarded for walking on a loose leash.
The first few times a dog meets one or several cats during the Polite Walking training, we may use “visit the cat” as a reward for working on a loose leash, if the dog is more motivated by the cats than by the treat.

This is the “Wait” behaviour. The dog learns to wait at the door for permission to walk through. We may start with the door closed, just rewarding the dog for hesitating in front of it. Later on, the door is open, and even later, there will be cats outside as distractions. The dog is rewarded for waiting. If the dog is unable to wait in the face of distractions, we take a step back; always trying to set up the dog for success.
