Would you like to come and see how we train? Every couple of months, we offer a series of four OPEN HOUSE events. Our next three events are planned for the following dates:

Friday 10 September 7:00 pm – 9:15 pm
Saturday 25 September 11:00 am – 1:15 pm

There will be Free Training Advice, Training Videos, Games & Snacks. Please bring yourself and your family if you like, but we regret that only registered students’ dogs can attend.

IS YOUR DOG DISPLAYING A PROBLEM BEHAVIOUR?

PRIVATE LESSONS and BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATIONS are offered in your home anywhere in the Cowichan Valley area,  from Malahat, Cobble Hill, Mill Bay and Shawnigan Lake in the south, throughout the areas of Cowichan Bay, Duncan and Cowichan Lake, to Crofton, Chemainus and Ladysmith in the north.

If you have a problem with any particular behaviour that your dog is displaying, please do not hesitate to contact me for a consultation.

Any sudden changes in behaviour may be partially or wholly caused by a medical condition, so before starting a behaviour modification programme, or even before contacting a behaviour consultant, you should first consult with your veterinarian in order to rule out any medical problem.

ARE YOU CONCERNED THAT YOUR DOG MAY BE “DOMINANT”?

To quote the Association of Pet Dog Trainers’ Position Statement on “Dominance and Dog Training”:

“There has been a resurgence in citing “dominance” as a factor in dog behavior and dog-human relationships. This concept is based on outdated wolf studies that have long since been disproven. Contrary to popular belief, research studies of wolves in their natural habitat demonstrate that wolves are not dominated by an “alpha wolf” who is the most aggressive pack member. Rather, wolves operate with a social structure similar to a human family and depend on each other for mutual support to ensure the group’s survival.

Dogs are not wolves. The idea that dog behavior can be explained through the application of wolf behavior models is no more relevant than suggesting that chimpanzee behavior can be used to explain the intricacies of human behavior. While wolves and dogs share some similarities in behavior, there are many more significant differences. Dog training and behavior modification strategies that rely primarily on misinterpretations of wolf behavior are therefore irrelevant, ineffective and can lead to serious negative complications.”

If your dog is displaying a behaviour that concerns you, please consult with a professional trainer or behaviour consultant that uses up-to-date, sound and humane training methods that are based in science.

TEACHING PRINCIPLES

My teaching is based on established Learning Science, using Positive Reinforcement (being part of Operant Conditioning), as well as Classical Conditioning. Unless you particularly want to, there is no need for you to learn the details of the science (but if you are interested, let me know!). In practice, it simply means that we reward the good, ignore the bad and have lots of fun in the process!

There is no force involved in what I teach; our training is humane, fun and – so long as you do your homework! – usually quite successful.
